The Needles Unified School District boasts the largest geographical area in the continental United States. Although Needles is in San Bernardino County, it is closer to Arizona (3 miles), and Nevada (15 miles) than it is to the San Bernardino County seat (180.miles).


Needles Unified School District ("NUSD"), is comprised of eight schools (five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one Educational Training Center) with a combined enrollment of 1,335 (1,107 of which are within the City of Needles).


NUSD participates in the Class Size Reduction Act in grades 1 through 3, limiting class size to 20 at these grade levels. The overall teacher to student ratio for the district is 19:1. GATE programs (Gifted and Talented Education) are available at all sites with pullout programs available in the third grade. Band and instrument classes begin in fifth grade, and foreign language classes begin in sixth grade. Computer education begins in Kindergarten and all classrooms have Internet access. The high school (100 years old), Middle school and both in-town elementary schools have complete computer labs with at least 30 stations with Macintosh and PCs available.mustangs


The median years of teaching experience at NUSD are 15 years. 19% of the Needles High School graduating class attend a 4-year college, 33% attend a 2-year college, and 2% attend Business/Technical School. The percentage of Senior taking the SAT is 49%, with average scores of 455 in mathematics, and 441 in verbal. NUSD came in 19th of 38 school districts in San Bernardino County in the most recent round of SAT scores. During the 2001 - 2002 school year, there were 4 dropouts, 2 each in grade 9, and 1 each in grades 11 and 12. schLast year our High School was selected for the NBC Show "School Pride" Where with the help of the community they came out and gave our school a make over.
The average absentee rate is 10.2% and the one-year dropout rate is 7.9%.

Post-Secondary Education:
Mohave Valley Community College, Bullhead City, AZ: Is a two-year college with a total enrollment for the 5 campuses of 5,200. Mohave County is the fifth largest in the continental United States, is located in the northwest corner of Arizona. It continues to be the fastest growing county in the state. With a population of more than 100,000, Mohave County is a rural area with an abundance of outdoors recreational opportunities. From the pine-covered peaks of the Hualapai Mountains to the shores of the Colorado River, Mohave County has the unique distinction of having all five of the climatic zones within its border. Mohave County is also located in close proximity to several large metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
Community College of Southern Nevada: Laughlin, NV: CSN has a small presence in Laughlin. The Community College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is a comprehensive educational institution within the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCSN). Founded in 1971, the College serves diverse audiences in Southern Nevada through five educational areas: occupational training, university transfer preparation, continuing education, developmental education, and counseling and guidance. These services are correlated with community needs to enhance the quality of the lives of the individuals residing in the College's service area.

There are 50 full-time enrollees at the Bullhead City campus (25 undergraduate and 25 graduate students). NAU provides undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral studies. NAU has almost 20,000 students (with more than 14,000 in Flagstaff) and offers comprehensive academic programs leading to approximately one hundred baccalaureate, forty-four masters, and nine doctoral degrees. In addition to the range of programs offered in Flagstaff, it provides statewide instruction through its interactive television and satellite transmission systems, its academic center in Yuma, and academic offices throughout Arizona.
